Wendell Pierce Victim of Racism

On X (formerly Twitter), this chilling message could be read this morning: “For those of you who don’t understand my righteous anger; I’m on 2 TV series, ELSBETH and RAISING KANAN. I’m filming SUPERMAN. Two years ago, I finished the fourth season of JACK RYAN. Last year I finished a run on Broadway in DEATH OF A SALESMAN. Even with my proof of employment, bank statements and real estate holdings, a white apartment owner DENIED my application to rent the apartment…..in Harlem, of all places. Racism and bigots are real. There are those who will do anything to destroy life’s journey for Black folks. When you deny our personal experiences, you are as vile and despicable.”

Everyone will have noticed the return of exacerbated racism, unleashed by the actions of former U.S. President Donald Trump, who, during his presidency, seemed to tolerate numerous racist acts to the point where some individuals felt no restraint on the matter. These are the same people, with extreme ideas under the guise of a delusional and medieval view of religion, who ban certain books and deny the right to abortion. Once we understand this phenomenon, we also understand what drives some to behave so horrendously towards Mr. Pierce.

The arguments of these people are generally a series of lies and stupidity, with racism being the worst kind of stupidity. In a country that has produced such elegant and important figures as Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., among others, who managed to raise awareness worldwide through their actions and words, it is shocking to still see this kind of behavior and even thought today. It is extremely important to keep this part of American history in memory and to ensure that everyone, regardless of nationality or color, participates in this reflection and works at their level to improve things for everyone. In 2024, if one is even minimally educated, it is inconceivable to consider the existence of inferior races or beings. We are all different and complementary. As the Republican Party has become a party in the hands of the most extreme, it is also important to remember that not all Republicans are racist or share the most retrograde ideas. As always, it is a minority of loud and retrogressive individuals who do everything to perpetuate these kinds of things. Every media outlet has the right and duty to denounce what happened to Mr. Pierce, because remaining indifferent would be giving reason to those we denounce.
