It started off as a friendly little network, filled with kind people helping each other on various topics. But before long, it became a haven for ‘influencers’ who influence nothing, fake wellness ‘experts,’ and other types whose only aim is to squeeze a few dollars out of gullible users. Quickly, it also turned into one of the largest networks for solicitation, where nearly every other profile seems to be a Nym or OnlyFans account, sometimes leaving you to wonder if the profiles even belong to adults. Then came the exodus from X, with the same people flocking to Threads…
Since Threads also appears to be unmoderated, it didn’t take long for the same issues to spill over into our feeds, just like on X. It started with people, for one reason or another, receiving hateful messages, then came the extremist vegans and other radical types, followed by defenders of the Republican Party, which we now know has taken a hard turn to the far right.
Perhaps it’s time to recognize the pitfalls of social media. Unmoderated platforms quickly become amplifiers for the most extreme voices and groups. In the future, we may even need to pay to access a safe network, free from this kind of content. Instagram has already become nearly unbearable, and Threads is veering in the same direction as X—a sinking ship. Blocking suspicious profiles is futile; they just keep flooding back into your feed. Good for news updates only, but for anything else—best to steer clear!”
