Editorial – September 2024

The grand Democratic show is over, and it is certain that it was a great political success for Kamala Harris and her teams, who managed to hit the mark on most societal issues. This highlighted the chasm separating the far-right Republicans represented by Trump from the intelligence, humor, and deep political sense of the two Democratic candidates. So much so that it practically erased the Republican campaign from the media while awaiting the Kamala Harris/Trump debate. However, many questions arise about the risks of violence if Trump were to lose the election, as well as potential election interference by Trump’s teams, as pointed out by the Washington Post in this article.

Nevertheless, Kamala Harris showed during the DNC that she was ready to face the challenges ahead, drawing on her experience as a prosecutor and her preparation during her vice presidency to handle all the challenges that will inevitably arise. The Republican team now seems to be nothing more than a stream of insults and disjointed remarks, aiming only to appeal to a segment of the white population, embittered and influenced by the most extreme religious views that have led to the banning of abortion, censorship of books, and other such foolishness… as well as a geopolitical vision content with the most extreme regimes. It is a grim picture and difficult to combat, as many continue to vote Republican more out of habit than conviction.

For all these reasons, the September elections will not be like any other, with on one side an old man who is only brooding over his vengeance and stoking hatred, and on the other side, Kamala Harris, who shines like a movie star, representing hope and renewal in every domain. She can boast of a thriving economic policy and many societal benefits led by President Biden, who wisely stepped aside and actively supports the presidential candidate. Indeed, those who once believed that electing a woman of color was impossible may well be proven wrong.

Since the beginning of her media exposure ahead of her candidacy, Harris has made no missteps. The choice of Waltz as her running mate also deserves praise in this unique electoral context, as he appears to be an ideal candidate for vice president, capable of handling even the most tense situations. The Republicans’ problem now is finding someone to match the level of debate set by Kamala Harris. Unfortunately, unless they replace their current candidate, this is unlikely to happen, as Trump has taken control of the party. There aren’t many left to stand up to him, and this may be his main issue. Between those who would rather not vote for Trump and those who would rather vote for Kamala Harris, this could prove to be a significant part of his Achilles’ heel.

We can only hope that democracy wins, which would also mean the end of Trump’s dominance.
